Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process involved in HVAC duct cleaning?

At Silver Star our process has been streamlined for best results and outcome to ensure the ducts are clean and your home or work place is environmentally friendly for all to enjoy.

Before we commence the clean we switch the system on ensuring that it’s working. We then proceed to do our 5-step cleaning –

1 Step – Open the unit and clean the fan inside the unit,

2 Step – Clean the Air Return Vent. This means cleaning the filter and intake pipe,

3 Step – Thoroughly clean each duct pipe using reverse air pressure to dislodge the dust and debris.

4 Step – Once each aspect of the duct system has been cleaned, the system is turned on as a final check.

5 Step – Sanitise the system with a natural tea tree oil spray into the return air vent.**This is optional.

When and how frequently should we have our heating & cooling ducted system, and HVAC system cleaned?

Just like the respiratory system of your body, the duct heating and cooling system is the ‘lungs’ of your home.

When neglected, these ducts can gather dust, debris, and allergens, adversely affecting the air quality in your home. This not only circulates unpleasant odours but also releases particles that can significantly impact the health and comfort of your household or workspace.

Unclean heating and cooling ducts pose a significant health risk. Therefore, it is recommended to have· them cleaned every 1 to 2 years, although the exact frequency depends on several variables.

For instance, if you’re experiencing allergies, unexplained symptoms, or illnesses, it could indicate the need for duct cleaning. Similarly, the presence of large deposits of dust or debris in your air ducts, frequent sneezing when the heating or cooling system is on, or an unending need to dust furniture could all be signs that your ducts require cleaning.

An unexpected spike in your heating bill, decreased heating efficiency in your home or work environment, or the presence of pets could also warrant more frequent duct cleaning. Furthermore, it’s advised to clean the ducts after buying a new home, completing a renovation, or nearby construction might have affected your indoor air quality.

How long will it take to clean the HVAC system in my home?

The duration of a duct or HVAC system cleaning in a home can vary. Factors such as the size of your home, the number of vents, the location of the ducts (whether on the floor, ceiling, or wall), and the number of systems in your home play a role. Typically, it can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

How does a professional duct cleaning differ from what I can do myself?

Cleaning the ducts your self is possible but just on the surface. At Silver Star, the ducts are thoroughly deep cleaned using the correct equipment so as to not risk the likely event of damaging the ducts – which can prove costly.

Secondly, our skilled technicians can detect underlying problems with duct pipes and if a pipe is broken they can replace or repair duct pipes.

Thirdly, our specialist technicians will clean the whole system including all the duct pipes, the return air vent and the unit.

For peace of mind and to ensure a thorough deep clean, it’s best using a professional to clean the duct system in your home.

How much does a residential duct cleaning service cost?

Hiring a professional to clean the ducts at Silver Star need not break the bank! The price in cleaning the ducts in your home is determined on a number of factors such as, how many ducts are in your home, do you have floor or ceiling ducts, the number of systems in your home and the complexity of your system.

How do I prepare for a residential duct cleaning service?

The ducts and air return is cleaned from inside the home. If you have floor ducts we ask that you move anything that is on top or near the duct so that we have enough room to clean each duct. Similarly with ceiling ducts if you have any furniture directly below the duct, move the furniture (where possible) slightly so that we can place a ladder or equipment.

If the unit is situated in the roof cavity we will need access via the manhole. Generally if you have ceiling ducts the unit will be inside the roof cavity. Likewise if your unit is under the house we will need access via a manhole outside.
